Background info

On July 30th, 2025, United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director, Kash Patel, was spotted at the Beehive holding secret meetings with Government Ministers.

The following day it was announced the FBI will be opening a permanent office in Aotearoa.

US sources have revealed this is part of a wider agenda to expand US spying capabilities in the Pacific, and influence in our domestic affairs.

Despite this, the New Zealand Government refuse to provide any details about the FBI’s role, powers, or oversight in Aotearoa.

Why we say no:

Erosion of Mana Motuhake: Allowing a foreign intelligence agency to operate permanently on our whenua without consultation or scrutiny poses a direct threat Aotearoa’s independence.

Breaches Te Tiriti o Waitangi: There has been no consultation with, or consent from Tangata Whenua. Any permanent foreign presence on this whenua must respect and reflect the constitutional relationship promised by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Normalises Foreign Surveillance: The FBI has a track-record of mass surveillance, racial profiling, and political interference, especially against indigenous peoples, activists, and marginalised communities. We cannot allow Aotearoa to become Donald Trump’s South Pacific Spy-base.

Lack of Transparency and Accountability: There was no public announcement, no Parliamentary debate, and no clear explanation of the FBI’s legal authority here. This sets a dangerous precedent. Once a foreign agency is embedded, their presence grows, their influence deepens, and our ability to act independently is steadily eroded.

Pulls Aotearoa deeper into U.S Intelligence Alliances: This will further embed New Zealand into the U.S. led Five Eyes network, dragging us into global surveillance and wars that do not serve our interests, or those of the Pacific
